Students Learn To: 1. HT 5-4: Explain and analyse the causes and effects of events and developments in the modern world and Australia. 2. HT 5-5: Identify and evaluate the usefulness of sources in the historical inquiry process. 3. HT 5-7: Explain different contexts, perspectives and interpretations of the modern world and Australia. HINTS AND TOOLS: 1. Make sure you familiarise yourself with the tasks and their content. The technology utilised in the tasks are fairly straightforward but some students that struggle with ICT based activities may need some level of guidance. 2. You need to be comfortable with the Web 2.0 technologies used within this site. Students may need guidance in regards to being concise in the information they place in the timeline generator used in Task 1 so that this activity is most effective as the information is intended to be conveyed in a concise and visually engaging manner. 4. The sources for analysis within this site may include written, images but also film footage. Ensure your students have the skills to analysis this medium of source. 4. Both Task 1 and 2 may be achieved in small discussion groups as it may aid students to discuss their movement through the technology. However, it is essential that each student has a copy of the work achieved as the final assessment is an essay and purely individual, independent work. |

CONTENT: An overview of the causes of the wars, why men enlisted and where Australians fought:
INDICATORS: Students are able to:
1. Students will be assessed on their ability to comprehend and relay the central events of the twentieth century that led to both First and Second World Wars. To fulfill Task 1 using the timeline generator, the student will need to be concise and discern the most important events and contexts of this period leading to these conflicts; in clear fulfillment of outcomes HT 5-4 and HT 5-7. Through assessing the completed timelines and observing students progress through the work the teacher may ascertain whether students have achieved these outcomes. 2. Students will require the ability to determine the geographical and historical contexts in which Australian fought in both conflicts and, therefore, evaluate the effect of these conflicts on Australians; in fulfillment of outcome HT 5-4. This will require a degree of inquiry based learning and individual research. A teacher, through using questions and answers, as well as observation, may make anecdotal records of students progress with particular focus on students who may struggle with independent learning so as to determine assistance. 3. Within Task 3 a students ability evaluate a source's degree of reliability and describe the perspective towards both conflicts relayed within them will be assessed in fulfillment of outcomes HT 5-5 and HT 5-7. Through assessing of student's responses to the questions of Task 3 a teacher may gauge the level at which students have achieved these outcomes. 4. The final assessment within this site will ascertain a student's ability to reflect on their own achievements and abilities within the frame of inquiry based learning; allowing them to determine what needs to improve prior to their completion of the final essay in which they will express what they have learned and their ability to evaluate these central conflicts and Australia's role within it. Through assessing these essays teachers may judge the performance of their students and their comprehension of this vital period within modern history both for Australia and internationally. |
