Almost a million Australians, both men and women, served in the Second World War.
When Germany invaded Poland in 1939, WWII had began and Australia announced its support to Britain. The Royal Australian Navy (RAN) participated in operations against Italy after its entry into the war in June 1940, however the Australian soldiers did not engage in combat until 1941.
The Australian military effectively fought two wars one campaigns against Germany and Italy in Europe, as part of the British Commonwealth and the other against Japan in alliance with the United States and Britain.
The Second World War marked the first time the Australian mainland came under direct attack. The Japanese aircraft bombed towns in north-west Australia and Japanese midget submarines attacked Sydney harbour, leading to war against Japan.
Australian soldiers fought around the globe up until 1945 throughout Europe, the Mediterranean, Middle East, and North Africa, as well as against Japan in south-east Asia and other parts of the Pacific.
